About the Course

This Advanced Mental Health Counseling program is intended to prepare students to counsel persons experiencing psychological disturbance due to developmental, educational, career, cognitive, emotional, behavioral, cultural, relational or environmental issues. Participants develop competencies in case identification and formulation, evidence-based counseling/psychotherapy techniques, group processes, human development, and guidance and career counseling.

Course Syllabus

Month 1:             Mental Health Issues and Disorders – DSM & ICD – Part One (Mental Status Examination - Personality disorders - Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders - Mood disorders - Anxiety disorders – OCD – Stress – PTSD - Dissociative disorders -)

Month 2:             Mental Health Issues and Disorders – DSM & ICD – Part Two (Impulse control disorders not elsewhere classified - Somatoform disorders - Sleep disorders - Sexual and gender identity disorders - Eating disorders - Adjustment disorders - Factitious disorders - Delirium, dementia and amnestic and other cognitive disorders - Disorders usually first diagnosed in infancy, childhood, or adolescence -  Mental disorders due to a general medical condition - Substance related disorders)

Month 3:             Counseling Process and Documentation + Understanding Learning Styles

Month 4:             Counseling Techniques & Therapies – 1 - 100 (Brief Counseling Techniques, Adlerian / Psychodynamic Techniques, Gestalt Techniques, Social Learning Techniques, and Cognitive Approaches & Techniques)

Month 5:             Techniques and Therapies – 101 – 200 (Behavioral Techniques, Behavioral approaches using positive reinforcement and punishments, Classic Therapy Techniques, CBT, Metaphor Therapy Techniques, Creative therapy techniques & NLP techniques)

Month 6:             Techniques and Therapies – 201 – 300 & Above (Play Therapy Techniques, Mindfulness Using Art Therapy Techniques,  Humanistic Phenomenological Approach Techniques, 65 Techniques used by 65 expert therapists and mixed bag of another 40 techniques)

Month 7:             Assessment, Case formulation and using Interventions with Children and Adolescent Issues and Disorders (practice with behavioral, academic and mental health issue based cases)

Month 8:             Career & Work Counseling

Month 9:             Family, Marital & Couple Counseling

Month 10:           Substance Abuse & Addiction Counseling

Month 11:           Counseling for Abuse victims

Month 12:           Counseling for Suicidal intentions and self-injury - Special Topics in Counseling - Ethical and Professional Practice
